The upcoming Version and what is in it
I have been working hard on Pro Clan Manager and its still going to be quite some time before the next release. I thought it was time for a news post describing what I have been up to.
First off I spent a lot of time cleaning up the Sourceforge project pages so that it's useful. The project is now a lot more managed then it was before. Every bug is documented on the "bugs" page and every feature added to the "feature requests" page. If you have a bug or feature you want added go to the Sourceforge project page then go to the appropriate link. Please check that your feature or bug hasn't already been added.
We got subversion working as I said in my last news post and so far it has been great. I've been able to submit my changes very easily through the system with no problems. I suggest if you want to check out what we've been up to that you download the subversion copy. I should warn you though that the subversion copy isn't yet at a stage where it works as a stable copy.
My aim for the subversion copy is that we get to a stage where it is stable to use. Once this happens my policy will be only to commit stuff that doesn't break the package, but right now we're redoing the templates with smarty and it is breaking a whole lot of stuff. We've had to go through everything we've made to change to smarty and so far it's been good for the code as it has made me go through a change it for the better but it has been a slow change.
Right now all the public areas of the site have smarty templates, all that's left to do are the private areas (login only) of the site. If you go to the main website (www.proclanmanager.com) you can see this in action as it uses the smarty templates.
You're probably asking yourself why smarty is so important. Well it has let us do a lot of things we couldn't do with my old template class. For example I just finished the control panel template. It now hides the options that a clan member doesn't have access to and properly aligns the options that he does have access to. This would have been hard to do under my old template system. A few other things I have added already have been that we have gotten rid of ALL the waiting screens. So now you no longer have to reload the page whenever you login, vote in a poll and download a file.
We just have to clear up the template pages and make them look nicer but all the functionality is there.
There is going to be a lot more public features. You'll be able to flag a poll or file download as public so that anyone can vote or download. We are also going to be addressing the issue of people without email on their web server.
This has probably been the biggest compliant I have heard and its time something was done about it. I'll be implementing a new way for users to sign up so that emails do not have to be used when registering new members. Along with this a lot of small fixes will be done.
